    • Joshua Rapp has won the 2021 Best PhD Dissertation Award from the IEEE Signal Processing Society.
      The award recognizes a PhD thesis completed on a signal processing subject within the past three years for its relevant work in signal processing while stimulating further research in the field.

      Dr. Rapp completed his PhD at Boston University in 2020 with a thesis entitled "Probabilistic Modeling for Single-Photon Lidar." The dissertation tackles challenges of the acquisition and processing of 3D depth maps reconstructed from time-of-flight data captured one photon at a time.
      The award will be presented at the 2022 IEEE International Conference on Image Processing (ICIP) in France.

    • Toshiaki Koike-Akino's research activities in communications, error control coding and optical technologies at MERL have earned him election as a Fellow Member of Optica (formerly OSA), the foremost professional association in optics and photonics worldwide. Fellow membership in Optica is limited to no more than ten percent of the membership and is reserved for members who have served with distinction in the advancement of optics and photonics. Koike-Akino is one of 106 members from 24 countries in Optica’s 2022 Fellows Class, elected during the Board of Directors of Optica meeting held on 2nd of November, 2021.

      “Congratulations to the 2022 Optica Fellows,” said 2021 President Connie Chang-Hasnain, University of California, Berkeley, USA. “These members exemplify what it means to be a leader in optics and photonics.     • The Elevators and Escalators Division of Mitsubishi Electric US, Inc. has been recognized as a 2022 CES® Innovation Awards honoree for its new PureRide™ Touchless Control for elevators, jointly developed with MERL. Sponsored by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), the CES Innovation Awards is the largest and most influential technology event in the world. PureRide™ Touchless Control provides a simple, no-touch product that enables users to call an elevator and designate a destination floor by placing a hand or finger over a sensor. MERL initiated the development of PureRide™ in the first weeks of the COVID-19 pandemic by proposing the use of infra-red sensors for operating elevator call buttons, and participated actively in its rapid implementation and commercialization, resulting in a first customer installation in October of 2020.

    • The MERL Signal Processing group achieved first place in the cross-subject transfer learning task and fourth place overall in the NeurIPS 2021 BEETL AI Challenge for EEG Transfer Learning. The team included Niklas Smedemark-Margulies (intern from Northeastern University), Toshiaki Koike-Akino, Ye Wang, and Prof. Deniz Erdogmus (Northeastern University). The challenge addresses two types of transfer learning tasks for EEG Biosignals: a homogeneous transfer learning task for cross-subject domain adaptation; and a heterogeneous transfer learning task for cross-data domain adaptation. There were 110+ registered teams in this competition, MERL ranked 1st in the homogeneous transfer learning task, 7th place in the heterogeneous transfer learning task, and 4th place for the combined overall score. For the homogeneous transfer learning task, MERL developed a new pre-shot learning framework based on feature disentanglement techniques for robustness against inter-subject variation to enable calibration-free brain-computer interfaces (BCI). MERL is invited to present our pre-shot learning technique at the NeurIPS 2021 workshop.

    • IEEE has announced that the recipients of the 2022 IEEE James L. Flanagan Speech and Audio Processing Award will be Hervé Bourlard (EPFL/Idiap Research Institute) and Nelson Morgan (ICSI), "For contributions to neural networks for statistical speech recognition," and the recipient of the 2022 IEEE Fourier Award for Signal Processing will be Ali Sayed (EPFL), "For contributions to the theory and practice of adaptive signal processing."     • During the 2021 International Microwave Symposium Week (June 20-25), Rui Ma will give an invited talk on MERL's recent power amplifiers research at an IMS Technical Workshop to be held on June 21st, titled "From Digital to Intelligent: Advancement of MISO Power Amplifiers by Machine Learning".

      IMS is the annual flagship conference of IEEE MTT-S (Microwave Theory and Techniques Society) and the centerpiece of Microwave Week. It is the largest gathering of RF/Microwave professionals in the world and combines multiple technical conferences with the biggest commercial exhibitions for the microwave industry.

    • MELCO and MERL researchers have won "Excellent Presentation Award" at the IPSJ/CDS30 (Information Processing Society of Japan/Consumer Devices and Systems 30th conferences) held on January 25, 2021. The paper titled "Sub-1 GHz Coexistence Using Reinforcement Learning Based IEEE 802.11ah RAW Scheduling" addresses coexistence between IEEE 802.11ah and IEEE 802.15.4g systems in the Sub-1 GHz frequency bands. This paper proposes a novel method to allocate IEEE 802.11 RAW time slots using a Q-Learning technique. MERL and MELCO have been leading IEEE 802.19.3 coexistence standard development and this paper is a good candidate for future standard enhancement.     • MERL researcher Karl Berntorp was invited to give a lecture in the class "Autonomous vehicles – planning, control, and learning systems" at the Division of Vehicular Systems, Department of Electrical Engineering, Linkoping University. The course is for the engineering-program students at Linkoping University and gives a basic understanding of the available models, methods, and software libraries to work on autonomous vehicles, with particular focus on motion-planning and control methods.     • MELCO and MERL researchers have won one of two Best Paper Awards at International Workshop on Informatics (IWIN) 2020. The paper titled 'Hybrid CSMA/CA for Sub-1 GHz Frequency Band Coexistence of IEEE 802.11ah and IEEE 802.15.4g', reports research on the severity of interference between IEEE 802.11ah and IEEE 802.15.4g based networks and also proposes methods to mitigate this interference in smart meter systems. This research reported in this paper has also informed several of MELCO/MERL's contributions to the IEEE P802.19.3 task group which is developing standards to allow for improved coexistence in outdoor metering systems.     • Marcus Greiff, a former MERL intern from the Department of Automatic Control, Lund University, Sweden, won one of three 2020 CCTA Outstanding Student Paper Awards and the Best Student Paper Award at the 2020 IEEE Conference on Control Technology and Applications. The research leading up to the awarded paper titled 'MSE-Optimal Measurement Dimension Reduction in Gaussian Filtering', concerned how to select a reduced set of measurements in estimation applications while minimally degrading performance, was done in collaboration with Karl Berntorp at MERL.

    • Due to COVID-19, MERL Network Intelligence Team scientists remotely presented 5 papers at the IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC) 2020, that was scheduled to be held in Dublin Ireland from June 7-11, 2020. Topics presented include recent advances in deep learning methods for communications and new access systems. Presentation videos are also found on our YouTube channel. Our developed technologies can facilitate a great advancement in broadband virtual conferencing which is required in post-COVID-19 society.

    • MERL researcher Pu (Perry) Wang organized a special session on June 10, 2020 titled Automotive Radar Sensing. Presentations included topics from deep waveform design, object tracking, mutual interference mitigation with their applications to high-resolution automotive imaging. The session's contributors come from both academia and industry.

      In this special session, our previous intern Yuxuan Xia (Chalmers Institute of Technology, Sweden) presented our work on extended object tracking using low-cost automotive radar sensors with a realistic measurement model. Yuxuan was also selected to be one of the six best student paper finalists at IEEE SAM 2020.

      ICASSP is the flagship conference of the IEEE Signal Processing Society, and the world's largest and most comprehensive technical conference focused on the research advances and latest technological development in signal and information processing.     • Due to COVID-19, MERL Optical Team scientists remotely presented 5 papers including 2 invited talks at the Optical Fiber Communications Conference (OFC) 2020, that was held in San Diego from March 8-13, 2020. Topics presented include recent advances in quantum signal processing, channel coding design, nano-optic power splitter, and deep learning-based integrated photonics. In addition, Dr. Kojima gave an invited workshop talk on deep learning-based nano-photonic device optimization.

Topics to be presented include recent advances in power amplifier, MIMO algorithms, WiFi sensing, video casting, visible light communications, user authentication, vehicular communications, secrecy, and relay systems, including sophisticated machine learning applications. A number of these papers are a result of successful collaboration between MERL and world-leading Universities including: Osaka University, University of New South Wales, Oxford University, Princeton University, South China University of Technology, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Aalborg University.

      GLOBECOM is one of the IEEE Communications Society’s two flagship conferences dedicated to driving innovation in nearly every aspect of communications. Each year, more than 3000 scientific researchers and their management submit proposals for program sessions to be held at the annual conference. Themed “Revolutionizing Communications,” GLOBECOM2019 will feature a comprehensive high-quality technical program including 13 symposia and a variety of tutorials and workshops to share visions and ideas, obtain updates on latest technologies and expand professional and social networking.

    • Anthony Vetro has been appointed for a two-year term as a Senior Area Editor of the new IEEE Open Journal of Signal Processing.

      This fully open access journal will publish high-quality, peer-reviewed papers covering the enabling technology for the generation, transformation, extraction, and interpretation of information. It comprises the theory, algorithms with associated architectures and implementations, and applications related to processing information contained in many different formats broadly designated as signals.

    • MERL Optical Team scientists will be presenting 5 papers including 2 invited talks at the 45th European Conference on Optical Communication (ECOC) 2019, which is being held in Dublin from September 22-26, 2019. Topics to be presented include recent advances in sophisticated constellation shaping schemes, lattice coding, and deep learning-based turbo equalization to mitigate fiber nonlinearity. Dr. Kojima is giving an invited workshop talk on deep learning-based nano-photonic device optimization. Dr. Tobias Fehenberger, a former Visiting Scientist is giving an invited talk related to our joint paper "Mapping Strategies for Short-Length Probabilistic Shaping"
