Kyeong Jin (K.J.) Kim
  • Biography

    Kyeong Jin's research interests include transceiver design, performance analysis of spectrum sharing systems, and design of cooperative communication systems. Since joining MERL, he has contributed in areas such as reliable communications, cooperative distributed communications, physical layer security, and GPS-aided signal processing for power grid systems. He was an Associate Editor of IEEE Communications Letters. Now he is an editor for IEEE Transactions on Communications. He also serves as a leading guest editor of the IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications (JSAC): Special Issue on Spatial Modulation for Emerging Wireless Systems.

This conference is one of the two IEEE Communications Societies flagship conferences dedicated to Communications for Human and Machine Intelligence. Topics of the published papers include, transmit diversity schemes, coding for molecular networks, and location and human activity sensing via WiFi signals.

      • Due to COVID-19, MERL Network Intelligence Team scientists remotely presented 5 papers at the IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC) 2020, that was scheduled to be held in Dublin Ireland from June 7-11, 2020. Topics presented include recent advances in deep learning methods for communications and new access systems. Presentation videos are also found on our YouTube channel. Our developed technologies can facilitate a great advancement in broadband virtual conferencing which is required in post-COVID-19 society.

        IEEE ICC is one of the IEEE Communications Society’s two flagship conferences dedicated to driving innovation in nearly every aspect of communications. Each year, more than 2,900 scientific researchers submit proposals for program sessions to be held at the annual conference. The high-quality proposals are selected for the conference program, which includes technical papers, tutorials, workshops and industry sessions designed specifically to advance technologies, systems and infrastructure that are continuing to reshape the world and provide all users with access to an unprecedented spectrum of high-speed, seamless and cost-effective global telecommunications services.

      • A paper on A Holistic Framework for Parameter Coordination of Interconnected Microgrids Against Natural Disasters, written by Tong Huang, a former MERL intern from Texas A&M University, has been selected as one of the Best Conference Papers at the 2020 Power and Energy Society General Meeting (PES-GM). IEEE PES-GM is the flagship conference for the IEEE Power and Energy Society. The work was done in collaboration with Hongbo Sun, K. J. Kim, and Daniel Nikovski from MERL, and Tong's advisor, Prof. Le Xie from Texas A&M University.

      • MERL researchers, Kyeong Jin Kim, Hongbo Sun, Philip Orlik, along with lead author and former MERL intern Siriramya Bhamidipati were awarded the Smart Grid Symposium Best Paper Award at this year's International Conference on Communications (ICC) held in Shanghai, China. There paper titled "GPS Spoofing Detection and Mitigation in PMUs Using Distributed Multiple Directional Antennas," described a technique to rapidly detect and mitigate GPS timing attacks/errors via hardware (antennas) and signal processing (Kalman Filtering).

  • Internships with K.J.

    • SP1307: Vehicular traffic environment sensing

      MERL is seeking a highly motivated, qualified intern to join a three month internship program. The ideal candidate will be expected to carry out research on environmental sensing in high frequency bands. The candidate is expected to develop innovative sensing technologies. Candidates should have strong knowledge about neural network and learning techniques, such as machine learning, deep learning, shallow learning, and distributed learning. In addition, understanding of spectrum sensing and wireless communications technologies is necessary. Proficient programming skills with Python, MATLAB, and C++, and strong mathematical analysis will be additional assets to this position. Candidates in their junior or senior years of a Ph.D. program are encouraged to apply.

    • SP1475: Advanced Signal Processing for Metasurface

      MERL is seeking a highly motivated, qualified intern to join an internship program. The ideal candidate will be expected to carry out research on Advanced Signal Processing for Metasurface. The candidate is expected to develop innovative signal processing for metasurface aided various applications. Candidates should have strong knowledge about electromagnetic field analysis for metasurface, passive beamforming, interference mitigation, and channel estimation. Proficient programming skills with Python, MATLAB, and C++, and strong mathematical analysis will be additional assets to this position. Candidates in their junior or senior years of a Ph.D. program are encouraged to apply. The expected duration of the internship is 3-6 months, with a flexible start date in 2020. This internship is preferred to be onsite at MERL, but may be done remotely where you live if the COVID pandemic makes it necessary.

    • SP1517: AI-based spectrum management for 5G wireless networks and beyond

      MERL is seeking a highly motivated, qualified intern to join a thirteen weeks internship program. The ideal candidate will be expected to carry out research on emerging 5G wireless networks and beyond for industrial applications. The candidate is expected to develop innovative spectrum-based traffic recognition and optimal scheduling for local spectrum access. Candidates should have strong knowledge about 5G networks, spectrum management, cognitive radio, and neural network. Proficient programming skills with MATLAB, C++, Python (Pytorch), experience with ns-3 simulator, and strong mathematical analysis will be additional assets to this position. Candidates in their junior or senior years of a Ph.D. program are encouraged to apply. This internship is preferred to be onsite at MERL, but may be done remotely where you live if the COVID pandemic makes it necessary.
